When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, life was never again going to be the same for the residents of the city.
About 200,000 people had their homes damaged and many hundreds died in the destructive hurricane.
Residents are faced with a dilemma: Do I rebuild or do I move to a new city?
For high school basketball coach Al Collins (Forest Whitaker), the answer is clear.
He has a team of boys who need some stability in their lives and he feels basketball can provide just that.
Before Katrina hit, Collins thought his team could take John Ehret High School all the way to the state championships.
In the aftermath of the disaster, he realises many of his best players have fled and he needs to rebuild the team with his remaining students, and any others he can find.
He assembles a mixed bunch of individuals, some talented, some not.
His biggest tasks are helping them overcome their personal demons and turning them into a team.
Becoming a true team is their only hope of turning around a stuttering start to the season and realising their dreams.
Coach Collins is a father figure and an inspirational motivator for the team.
He is the key to making it all happen.
Hurricane Season, which is based on a true story, is an inspirational sport-themed story which gets an extra edge from Katrina.
