Review: Russell Baillie
Some people are really going to like Helicopter Girl — who at ground level is half-Scots/half Ghanaian Jackie Joyce from Dundee — what with her Eartha Kitt-meets-Macy Gray growl, and her nutty lyrics set against backings which can suggest Portishead attempting a jazzy residency.
But even if all of the above prove agreeable, there's the small annoying matter of Joyce's self-conscious efforts to appear oh-so-wicked and weird which starts on the silly album cover and fair permeates the 13 tracks within.
Still, it has its moments (and not just in the song titles — Putin Circle Stockings anyone?), the best including the soul strut of 345 Wonderful, and the shades of David Lynch Glove Department.
