Glenora Bears, the sleeping giants of the domestic rugby league competition, finally looked like coming out of hibernation as they ground out a 26-10 win over Marist/Richmond.
In doing so they claimed a place in the Bartercard Cup playoffs at Manurewa's expense.
It was a fiery encounter at the Bears' home ground, a player from each side being sin-binned for high shots, but Glenora were always dominant. Canterbury confirmed their credentials and their second place with a 27-24 win at Manurewa. Both sides scored four tries but kicking proved the difference.
The Eastern Tornadoes went along with Hibiscus Coast's wishes to take a game north to recognise the talent they take out of Northland and were never in danger in Whangarei, getting home with a 22-14 win that confirms their fourth place.
Leaders Otahuhu, who had five men away with the NZ Residents squad, went to Birkenhead for a 16-8 win. So with four rounds to go and a six-point gap, they are pretty well assured of the minor premiership. The Bulls and Tornadoes look safe in second equal and Mt Albert are almost comfortable a point behind after their 38-32 win over Porirua in Wellington.
Manurewa, Wainuiomata and Hibiscus Coast sit just outside the top five.
