Horror on the front line

These images from the civil war in Syria have won one of journalism's top awards, the Robert Capa Gold Medal. Italian photographer Fabio Bucciarelli, working for Agence France-Presse and La Presse, captured the images during the harrowing battles for Aleppo last year. Bucciarelli told Time magazine: "The battle for the conquest of Aleppo is a real massacre." The 32-year-old compiled the photos, Battle to Death, over weeks with rebels of the Free Syrian Army in Aleppo during intense street fighting with government forces. He turned to photojournalism in 2009 after finishing an engineering degree specialising in digital imagery, and has since covered conflicts in Syria and Sudan.
