Parliamentarians in Solomon Islands have elected opposition leader Mannasseh Sogavare as the new Prime Minister in a move observers hope will end months of ethnic fighting.
"My new Government will address the crisis that has been affecting this nation this last 19 months," Sogavare said immediately after the vote, which he narrowly won 23-21. "My government is committed to bring Solomon Islands into national unity and reconciliation."
