Sentencing has been delayed for a New Zealand national due to be sentenced after the death of a man in Australia amid fresh allegations he assaulted prison guards this year.
New Zealand national Armstrong Renata was to have been sentenced in the Brisbane Supreme Court today for unlawful striking causing the death of Cole Miller, 18, in January last year.
The 22-year-old punched Miller in the back of the head while out in the Fortitude Valley nightclub district on January 2, 2016.
Miller suffered massive brain trauma, and his family made the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support in hospital the following day.
Renata was escorted into the dock in handcuffs on Monday flanked by an unusually high number of security guards.
The court heard he had been charged with two counts of serious assault in April, which solicitor Adam Magill confirmed later were to have been against corrective service officers.
Renata's case was adjourned to July 21 for review.
"His family have asked me not to comment," Magill said outside court.
