ROANOKE, Va. (AP) " A federal judge is considering Rolling Stone Magazine's challenge of a defamation verdict over a discredited story about a student's claim she was gang raped.
WVIR-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2lvOk8k ) a hearing was held Thursday in Roanoke to consider Rolling Stone's request to throw out the jury's November verdict. The jury awarded University of Virginia administrator Nicole Eramo $3 million after finding Rolling Stone and a reporter defamed her in the story, "A Rape on Campus."
Libby Locke, an attorney for Eramo, called Rolling Stone's challenge of the verdict "unfortunate." The judge's decision is expected within weeks.
The 2014 story gave the account of a woman identified only as "Jackie," who said she was gang raped at the school. A police investigation found no evidence to back up Jackie's claims.
This story has been corrected to reflect that the hearing is in Roanoke, not Charlottesville.
