To defend policies, Trump paints dark view of threats to US

WASHINGTON (AP) " President Donald Trump is painting an increasingly ominous picture of the danger posed by Islamic extremists. He's raising the prospect of imminent attacks on the United States as he tries to build support for his controversial refugee ban.

To Trump's supporters, the president's dark warnings show that he has a clear-eyed view of the terror threat facing the U.S. But Trump's critics suggest he is overemphasizing the threat of Islamic terrorism but ignoring other dangers at home and abroad. A list of what the White House calls "underreported" terrorist attacks includes only those with ties to the Islamic State, not numerous others undertaken in the name of other causes.

On Monday, Trump described Islamic extremism as "an enemy that celebrates death and totally worships destruction."
