No one was hurt in the blaze, however police called to the scene were filmed smiling and appearing to pose for a picture in front of the fire.

They later approached another man who was also trying to take a picture and asked him to move on. Nassau County Police Department told NBC 4 New York they are investigating what happened.

"The contents of this video are very concerning to the department and are currently under investigation," it said.

"If these officers are found to be in violation of any department rules and regulations, they will be appropriately disciplined." One neighbour, who preferred to remain anonymous told the news organisation it was "disgusting".

"I don't like that because it shows no concern about the people in the neighbourhood," he said.

"People in the neighbourhood just lost a house, and you're going to sit there taking selfies."

Another woman named Vera said she didn't think it was "appropriate" for officers to behave like that.

The officers in question have not been identified.
