A motorcyclist has blamed his love of pickled eggs for putting him almost twice over the drink-drive limit.

Lee Vaschez, 40, claimed to have eaten six or seven alcohol-soaked eggs at a friend's house before crashing his Ducati near his home in Ipswich, Suffolk, the Daily Mail reports.

Vaschez ate the eggs without realising their alcoholic content, his lawyer, Paul Booty, told the Ipswich Magistrates Court.

"Unfortunately as well as pickling fluid there was alcohol in there as well," Booty said.

Vaschez, who also admitted to having "a couple of shandies" earlier in the day, said he was dazzled by some lights before missing a right hand turn and driving into a kerb.

Vaschez admitted drink-driving and was banned from driving for 18 months, fined £340 (NZ$601) and ordered to pay £85 (NZ$150) costs and £34 (NZ$60) to the victims' fund.
