WASHINGTON (AP) " A commission created by Congress to study the need for a women's history museum in Washington says the museum should be built and should be part of the Smithsonian Institution.
The commission issued its report on Wednesday. It says it won't ask Congress to direct the Smithsonian to start building the museum right away. Instead, it will ask for $2 million in annual funding for the planning process, with the goal of building the museum within 10 years.
The commission says the museum should be on or near the National Mall and identifies three possible sites, including one that's near the Smithsonian's newest museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
The report says the museum would cost up to $180 million to build, funded by private contributions.
