A man has driven into a lake to escape a huntsman spider.

The incident happened off Kenwood Drive, Lake Cathie at about 10am on November 1, according to Camden Haven Times.

The man was on his way to the rubbish dump with some materials he had cleared out of his house when the saw rthe spider on him.

"I meant to hit the brake but instead I accidentally hit the accelerator," he said.

The vehicle came around a bend and over the bank of the lake into the water of the New South Wales lake.

"I was surprised at how deep it was," the driver said.

He said his door was locked but he managed to make a lucky escape out of the window which was already three-quarters open.
