Shoppers in a branch of Wilkinson's were shocked when a man entered the store on Sunday morning and horrifically mutilated himself with a tool he'd picked up from a shelf.
According to witnesses the man, who has not been named, entered the store on Sheffield's Haymarket shopping street, then climbed the stairs to the first floor.
Once there he found the electrical aisle where there was a pair of bolt cutters. He used them to cut off one of his toes, which he put into his mouth.
A bystander dialled 999, and the man was taken to hospital by emergency services to receive treatment for his injuries.
One eyewitness told the Sheffield Star: "A man went into Wilkinson's Haymarket, went upstairs to the electrical aisle, picked up some bolt cutters, chopped his big toe off and stood eating it.
"The aisle was taped off until police and forensics went."
A police spokesman said: "Emergency services were called to a shop in Haymarket, Sheffield, at around 11.10am on Sunday, October 30 following reports of concern for a man inside the premises.
"Upon officer arrival, the man was taken to hospital with injuries to his foot, where he remains.
"There are not believed to be any other parties involved. The incident is not being investigated as a crime."
