Israeli military says soldier wounded by fire from Lebanon

JERUSALEM (AP) " An Israeli soldier was lightly wounded by fire from Lebanon on Wednesday, the military said, in a rare flare-up along a border that has remained largely calm for the past decade.

The military says shots were fired from a vehicle on the Lebanese side of the border toward a routine patrol. The soldier was hit in the arm and evacuated to hospital. Israeli troops returned fire.

A senior Lebanese security official denied there was any firing from Lebanon across the border toward Israel. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

The border area has remained largely quiet since a month-long 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah militants. Israel accuses the group of continuing to try to carry out attacks in Israel and recruits accomplices among its citizens.

The shooting came a day after an Israeli was shot and killed near a border fence with Egypt when an Egyptian soldier mistook him for an illegal migrant.
