A man has been arrested for dressing as a tree and standing in the middle of the road in Portland, Maine.

Local police initially thought the spectacle was an art project, as so many people were stopping to take pictures.

When the foliage was removed from his head, the culprit was revealed to be 30-year-old Asher Woodworth.

He told police he wanted to see how dressing up as a tree and standing in the middle of the road would "affect peoples natural choreography".

Mr Woodworth refused to speak to local media, but a passer-by claimed the man was studying traffic patterns.

Pictures of the tree-man were retweeted thousands of times on Twitter as people expressed their amusement at the bizarre crime.

According to local media, the man was charged with obstructing a public way but is out on bail after paying US$60.

Police didn't arrest him straight away; they asked for his name and gave him a warning.

However, he refused to co-operate and continued to block the road.

It is still unclear exactly why Mr Woodworth decided to dress as a tree.
