A heartbreaking photo of a dog left abandoned on a pile of rubbish by his owners has moved animal lovers to tears.

Facebook user Liz Marie shared the photo captured by the Detroit Youth and Dog Rescue (DYDR) after the dog's family were reportedly evicted from their Michigan home.

"This picture absolutely breaks my heart, I am literally in tears," she wrote. "Meet Boo, this beautiful boy was left behind with the trash and belongings when the family moved out.

"He stayed right by their stuff and never left it, confused and lonely. He was rescued by Mike Diesel (from DYDR) after a neighbour contacted him because Boo had been discarded outside for over a week.

"This makes me cry. So sad and to think Boo still wants that family. Dogs are so faithful," wrote one Facebook user.

"It's sad when families are evicted. If they have a place to go, that place doesn't always accept their pets," another commented.

Kathy Bieber-Dombecki wrote: "Poor baby! How can anybody be so heartless."

Boo is currently up for adoption and is "learning to trust again" at the Detroit Youth and Dog Rescue centre.
