PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) " A Pakistani police officer says authorities have found remains of three charred bodies of women in the northwest of the country, and investigators are trying to determine whether their deaths are is the latest case of honor killing.

Mohammad Riaz said Tuesday the women's bodies were found Monday in a rubbish dump on the outskirts of Peshawar city.

He said initially residents assumed someone was burning garbage, but a passer-by later alerted police after seeing what he described as human skeletons amid burnt waste.

He said police were investing all aspects of the case and DNA tests were being conducted, but that they suspected it was a case of honor killing.

Nearly 1,000 women are murdered in Pakistan each year for violating conservative norms on love, marriage and public behavior.
