Bahamas detains 117 Haitians at sea near island of Inagua

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) " Authorities in the Bahamas say 117 Haitians have been detained on suspicion of illegal immigration after they were stopped on a cabin cruiser in the south of the island chain.

The Royal Bahamas Defense Force says the migrants were stopped in the 40-foot boat before dawn Monday northwest of the island of Inagua. A defense force statement said the 96 men, 17 women and four children were being transferred to the custody of immigration officials in New Providence.

Haitian migrants are typically repatriated back to their homeland if they are stopped transiting the waters of the Bahamas.
