Judge dismisses much of lawsuit over suicide in police car

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) " A judge has dismissed most of a federal civil rights lawsuit filed over the death of a handcuffed man who shot himself in the head while in a police car in Arkansas.

U.S. District Judge Kristine Baker on Friday granted summary judgment to the city of Jonesboro, two police officers and a former police chief on five of six claims. Baker said a claim of unreasonable search and seizure wasn't addressed in motions. She gave both sides seven days to cite any pending claim on that issue.

Teresa Rudd filed the lawsuit over the 2012 death of her 21-year-old son, Chavis Carter. He was arrested following a traffic stop. An officer failed to find Carter's gun while searching him.

Rudd's attorney didn't' immediately return a call seeking comment.
