Police say a stabbing suspect has died after being shot by an officer he attacked in southwest Georgia.
Albany police spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said in a statement Wednesday that the injured officer was treated at a local hospital and released.
The shooting happened shortly after 5 a.m. as the officer was responding to a report of a suspicious person. Police say an assailant stabbed the officer with an unknown object. The officer then shot the attacker. Both were taken to a hospital.
Banks says the officer is a 34-year-old man who has served with Albany police for three years. He has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Police did not immediately identify the suspect who was fatally shot.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate. GBI spokesman Scott Dutton said he did not immediately know the conditions of the officer or suspect.
Albany is located about 180 miles south of Atlanta.
