Romania: rare sighting of wild flamingo near Danube Delta

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) " Romania's ornithological society says there has been a rare sighting of four wild flamingo birds near the Danube Delta, the first time in more than 30 years.

The society said in a statement Monday the distinctive long-legged pink birds were spotted on Aug. 20 on a lake near Vadu, a Black Sea small town, south of the Danube Delta in eastern Romania.

Spokesman Ovidiu Bufnila told The Associated Press the last sighting was a pair of flamingo in 1985, although there are no photographic recordings of them

He said the bird with its rose-colored plumes, which sometimes stands on one leg, will not stay in Romania and will migrate to warmer climes of Africa or Asia.

In Europe, the flamingo finds its natural habitat in some areas around the Mediterranean.
