A chainsaw-wielding man in Australia has terrorised two women and two young children after breaking into a home on the New South Wales mid north coast.

Police say a 30-year-old man, who knew the victims, attacked the women aged 28 and 49 in their Port Macquarie home last night leaving them with non-life threatening lacerations.

A 5-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl were not injured and the man fled before surrendering at a police station.

The man was refused bail and will appear in Port Macquarie Local Court today.
