Georgia GOP elector resigns after anti-Trump comments

ATLANTA (AP) " A Georgia Republican has resigned from his role as an elector, hours after saying he would not vote for GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump as a member of the electoral college.

Baoky Vu says in a joint statement with the Georgia Republican Party that his comments would be "detrimental" to the party. Earlier Wednesday, Vu told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution ( ) that he wouldn't vote for Trump in November and may not support him as a member of the electoral college.

Georgia is one of 21 states that don't require electors chosen by political parties to back their party's candidate.

Republican Party Chairman John Padgett says in the statement that he accepted Vu's resignation and is confident Georgia Republicans will unite behind Trump. Padgett says attorneys are reviewing a replacement process.
