Anarchists cleared of disrupting service in Greek church

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) " A group of anarchists arrested for staging a protest in a Greek Orthodox cathedral in the northern city of Thessaloniki have been acquitted of disrupting a religious ceremony.

The 26 suspects were part of a group that chanted slogans and scattered fliers during Sunday's service to protest the police evacuations of three anarchist squats where some refugees had been housed.

One of the three Thessaloniki buildings that had been illegally occupied belongs to the Church of Greece.

A Thessaloniki court on Monday found 19 of the 26 guilty of refusing to comply with police instructions after the protest, and gave them six-month prison sentences, which are suspended for three years. All were set free.

The squat evictions have been condemned by Greece's governing left-wing Syriza party.
