Kosovo man charged with joining terrorist group

PRISTINA, Kosovo (AP) " Kosovo prosecutors say an ethnic Albanian who allegedly fought in Syria has been charged with participating in a terrorist group.

A prosecutors' statement on Friday said that the defendant, identified only as A.D., allegedly went to Turkey in November 2012 with four other Albanians. He is then said to have crossed the border into Syria and went to Aleppo where he joined his brother, a member of the Jabhat Al-Nusra terrorist group. For six months he allegedly took part in fighting in Aleppo and Qalamoun. He was arrested at the Pristina airport when he returned to Kosovo in May 2013.

He may face a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Authorities say that about 70 Kosovo citizens are believed to be active fighters with extremist groups in Syria and Iraq.
