Founder of France's National Front party, Jean-Marie Le Pen, is suing a dancer for taking an unflattering selfie of him on a plane.

Professional dancer and one of Madonna's ex-boyfriends, Brahim Zaibat, posted the photo captioned: "Let's all vote tomorrow to give them a knock-out blow. To preserve our fraternal France" on 12 December after sharing the same flight as Le Pen.

It also just so happened to be the day before the second round of France's regional elections.

Mettez les KO demain en allant tous voter.

Pour préserver notre France fraternelle !!! #jadoreça

The next day the National Front didn't come out on top and the selfie is now being blamed for affecting the regional election outcome.

Le Pen is trying to claim €50,000 (NZ$82,945) in damages from Zaibat, French magazine Public reported.

The photo, which was posted on Facebook, has already received almost 200,000 likes and has been shared more than 30,000 times.

Zaibat is yet to comment further on the photo.

French media reports the damages hearing will take place on January 22.
