RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) Former President Bill Clinton has condemned industrial espionage reportedly committed by the National Security Agency.
Clinton told Rio de Janeiro daily O Globo in an interview published Monday that "we shouldn't collect economic information under the pretext of security." The comment came in response to questions about classified documents leaked by former NSA analyst Edward Snowden that showed that the agency hacked the computer network of Brazil's state-run oil company Petrobras.
The documents also showed the NSA intercepted Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff's communications with aides and scooped up data on emails and telephone calls flowing through the country.
Clinton is in Rio for a meeting of his Clinton Global Initiative that brings together business leaders and politicians from throughout Latin America.
