HAGATNA, Guam (AP) Emergency officials in Guam say a tropic storm veered west from the island without causing major damage or serious injuries.
Pacific Daily News (http://bit.ly/1exoiYx) reports more than 1,000 people took shelter in public schools as Typhoon Francisco approached.
Government offices and schools closed and many residents shuttered homes and public buildings.
The National Weather Service says the storm's closest approach was about 150 miles. Winds were sustained at 45 mph with gusts to 60 mph.

Warning coordination meteorologist Chip Guard says October through December is normally the most active period for storms.
