Detectives are hunting a man who used a fake ID to withdraw $200,000 from a Melbourne bank account.

They say he walked into a Dandenong bank branch in the city's south in March and took out the huge sum in a bank cheque.

The cheque was later deposited into another account created with false credentials and then withdrawn as cash.

Security camera footage has been released of the man wearing tracksuit pants covered in white paint or plaster.

He is described as being of southern European appearance.
