Tajikistan shaken by moderate quake

A moderate 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck near the major Tajikistan city of Kulob early Sunday, the US Geological Survey reported.

The epicenter of the tremor, which occurred at 4.28am (local time) was located 99km north of Kulob at a depth of 10km, USGS said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in the Kulob district, 200km southeast of the capital Dushanbe.

The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
