Australian foreign minister Kevin Rudd almost had to hand over a jar of Vegemite after customs staff flagged it as a potentially dangerous liquid.

Mr Rudd was travelling from Mexico City to New York to attend next week's United Nations General Assembly meeting when his Vegemitre was questioned.

In a tweet, Mr Rudd said he needed "foreign ministerial intervention".

The incident has been confirmed by Mr Rudd's office, who said he needed assistance from Mexican Foreign Service officials to get the Vegemite on to the plane.
