Sean Simpson and Jonathon Marshall decided that they wanted to document their own angle on the Hero Parade.
Their plan was simple: they had a digital video camera, a microphone and a couple of fake media passes, as well as a single-minded determination to gatecrash Auckland's largest street party.
Their first task was to get to the parade.
After a quick phone call, the second-in-charge of Operation Hero - the police operation controlling the parade - drove to Auckland Central Police Station, picked them up and drove them directly to Ponsonby Rd.
From there, Simpson, the 34-year-old producer and co-director, and Marshall, the 16-year-old who fronts the documentary, got to the heart of the parade, interviewing volunteers, people in the crowd, those on various floats and other people on Ponsonby Rd.
Their documentary, tHE ROad, screens on Triangle at 8.30 tonight.
