It's been a brisk start to the week in Auckland, but today should warm up following low temperatures this morning.
MetService forecaster Stephen Glassey said a southwesterly flow over Auckland last night meant a cold morning.
"Today is looking like a fine day for Auckland, so temperatures should warm up as the day goes on."
Mr Glassey said cloud cover overnight meant temperatures should not reach the same lows as last night.
A front will begin moving up the country tonight, bringing heavy rain and strong winds Mr Glassey said.
"The worst of it is going to be tomorrow," he said.
"But even today the northwest flow is coming in."
Rain was expected to hit the west of the South Island while strong winds would batter the east.
Wellington and the Wairarapa could also be expected to be affected by winds from the front as it made its way north.
Dunedin may have seen the back of the extreme weather that caused havoc and flooding last week, but periodic showers and strong winds could be expected this week.
The MetService said the weather system that caused last week's heavy, persistent rain had been replaced with a more westerly flow which was drier.
Philip Duncan of Weather Watch said while periodic showers could be expected, the wet weather was not going to settle on the east coast.
"They have a little bit of rain coming on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, but the rest of the week is just a few showers, a much much drier week for them," he said.
"We are not seeing anything like close to what we saw last week."
Strong winds inland and in the mountains could however reach galeforce speeds.
"The biggest issue will probably be the strong winds," Mr Duncan said.
"Invercargill and Dunedin there will be some strong gusts for a time on Tuesday and Wednesday, maybe picking up again on Friday."
