North basks in temperatures of 19C but the good weather won’t survive the week, says forecaster.
Father's Day came with a gift of spring sunshine yesterday as Aucklanders basked in 19C temperatures.
But the warm weather won't last, with temperatures forecast to cool over the week.
Mairangi Bay surf lifesaver Daniel Short said the beach yesterday was busy. "For this time of year there's quite a lot of people."
Philip Duncan of WeatherWatch said the fine Sunday was caused by a southeast windflow.
"Typically there's cloudy highs this time of year.
"Last week's low cleared away and meant spectacular weather on the west coast."
While the vernal equinox was not due until September 23, "Mother Nature declared spring was here in August," he said.
"We've seen fairly mild weather across winter. When the wind dies out it's warm. This high coming in is giving northern areas a nice sunny start - but we may get a few clouds and showers later in the coming week."
Auckland could expect a high of 16C today but the forecast is to for the weather to become cloudier and rain is forecast for Thursday.
The high of 19C yesterday was also recorded in Hamilton.
