Whanganui's four veteran kayakers all scooped up medals on the rough waters of Lake Pupuke in a successful campaign at the World Masters Games last week.
Mark Stoneman, Bruce Baldwin, Graham Moore and Max Grant had spent ten weeks training with Whanganui Multisport Club stalwart Brian Scott to get ready for competition in K1, K2 and K4 craft - which included the boat used by New Zealand to win the K4 1000m gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
While they could not get the old boat to another medal-winning run, all four men experienced the thrill of standing on the podium in their K1 and K2 events.
Moore and Grant combined to win six gold medals, two silvers and two bronze across their K1 and K2 events on the North Shore.
Baldwin won bronze in the 17kg K1 Marathon early in the week, and then combined with Stoneman to get another bronze the following day.
