It was a disappointing end to the hopes of Paige Hourigan to make the ASB Women's Classic after her 6-2 6-2 loss to Australia's Arina Rodionova in the qualifiers on centre court in Auckland on Saturday.
Hourigan had missed out on direct entry through a wild card, which went to fellow Kiwis Marina Erakovic and Jade Lewis.
It put Hourigan, 19, into a tough matchup with veteran professional Rodionova, 27, who is currently ranked 186th in the world and has a career high of 157th in singles and 41st in doubles.
The Russian-born Australian played with consistency and good defensive skill.
