The latest rural edition of the Tough Kid challenge is being held at the Raetihi Showgrounds today with 220 kids from eight schools hitting the obstacle course for the Waimarino Tough Kid.
Organised by Sport Whanganui, the 1.5km-long challenge over and under obstacles is for Year 3-8 pupils - first as individuals and then in school teams.
It is the first year for the Waimarino Tough Kid, the first incarnation of the event held in Wanganui five years ago and becoming an annual fixture.
So did the Rangitikei Tough Kid challenge after the obstacle course race was introduced there four years ago.
Raetihi Primary School is the host school at today's event.
Racing was to start at 10.45am with the Year 3-4 boys' race and continue through the age grades every 15 minutes.
The team races were due to start at 12.15pm, with the prizegiving at 1.05pm.
