Organisers of the 67th annual River City Wheel Race Carnival are unsure of entry numbers and which of the country's elite riders will compete at the Cooks Gardens Velodrome this weekend.
Ron Cheatley said riders had until an hour before the event began at 4pm on Saturday to register and that made assessing the fields for the 21 races programmed difficult.
"We do know we will get riders from throughout the North Island, including East Coast, Taranaki, Wellington and beyond and there will be some name cyclists among them," Cheatley said yesterday.
"Last year we had the entire national track team here when we ran this event in conjunction with the International Night of the Stars event, but this year they have all just left for Paris to race at the World Track Championships starting next Wednesday, so unfortunately they won't be here this time.
"However, the free entry to the Wanganui velodrome on Saturday will make it more attractive for families to come along along and watch some quality track racing on the best outdoor velodrome."
