Three Wanganui teams remained in the running for the TSB Bank Taranaki Open men's fours tournament after the first games of post section play yesterday morning.
The Peter Belliss (Aramoho) skipped team had already qualified with six wins, and they were joined on Thursday by the teams of Cary Pinker (Wanganui), Roger Neilson (Wanganui East) and Warren Hausman (Marton), among the 44 squads who made it through out of 188 entries.
Pinker's team had been looking good with five qualifying wins before two losses put them under pressure, securing their berth in the final game with a 29-12 win over Wayne Collins (Hawera).
Neilson's team secured their sixth win with a 27-23 victory over Ian Lowry (Rahotu), while Hausman's team did well to come back and win their last two games, 29-23 over Don Hodge (Lepperton) and 30-8 against Albie Waitere (New Plymouth).
On Friday morning, Hausman's Marton team was eliminated, beaten 22-11 by Danny Delany (Onehunga).
Pinker's team just survived a tough match with Craig Johns (West End) 25-24, while Neilson had a comfortable win over John Gray (Fitzroy) 27-7.
The Belliss team had a 24-16 win over John Carter (Hutt) to also remain in contention.
