Wanganui's premier netball champions are starting 2013 with a new coach at the helm and a ton of optimism as they line up against the other top club sides in the Western region.
Former Kaierau Netball club member Marie Kinloch takes over coaching of the premier team, replacing Kate Ritani and Jackie Abraham who have family commitments.
Kinloch has experience in coaching primary, secondary, senior and representative level in Wanganui netball.
She was the manager of the Wanganui Under 15 team, coached by Trish Anstis, which defied expectations to reach the final of the nationals in New Plymouth last July.
Kristen Ashworth, Kaierau Netball's president, said Kinloch brought the experience and knowledge needed for their players to develop.
"We had a great season last year under the guidance of Kate Ritani and Jackie Abraham which got us entry into the Super League tournament, and we are excited to carry on this achievement with another strong season."
Kaierau A1 beat Wanganui High School A1 in last year's final 49-46 at Springvale Stadium.
This qualified them to play the Super League competition against the top Western Region teams from the likes of Manawatu, Taranaki and Horowhenua.
They will play a one-day tournament in Wanganui on March 17, followed by two days in Hawera, March 23-24.
For Kinloch, the new challenge is exciting.
"I am hoping the Super League will be a drawcard to attract many talented netball players to our trials, where we will endeavour to achieve another strong season for 2013," she said in a press release.
She said she was looking forward to working with a great group of dedicated and committed senior netball players.
Kaierau has an eleven-member committee for 2013, which are into planning their coach, player and umpire developments for the season.
The club worked with Sport Wanganui to create a formal development plan to help them stay on course.
Trials for the Premier 1 and 2 teams will take place at Rutherford Intermediate gymnasium on February 13, from 6-8pm, and February 16, 10am-12pm.
