For family farming operation Titiokura Hereford, building and developing a private sales client base for on-farm sales, any time of the year, has been the ideal way to offer a more personalised service, ensuring the right bull is matched to the right farm.
Burke and Peter Olsen farm 350 ha at Argyll in Central Hawke's Bay with a registered Herefordbreeding herd of 120.The father son partnership also farm 1000 romney cross ewes, 250 hoggets, 200 purebred suffolks and graze lambs for CMP on contract.
The farm consistently produces high performing stock with the lower cut of bull calves sold to the dairy industry as yearlings and the top animals kept for the on- farm sales.
Heifers are culled leaving 35 as replacements. 70 fresian weaner bulls were purchased in November and will be carried until Labour weekend, selling on the peaking spring market.
The Titiokura stud is built on the best North American genetics available starting back in 1969, with the main aim being "meat, meat, meat" explains Burke.
"Our cows are great foragers and have taken all that the seasons have thrown at them, they have just flourished."
The Titiokura cattle are renowned for being easy to work with and to be around.
"We love our cattle and that's really the bottom line."
Any stock unable to handle the recent tough drought conditions have not been retained.
"If they cant handle the pace they are gone, this includes any poor calvers - we have no room for free loaders or poor fertility."
Over the past 10 years Titiokura have concentrated on meat quality.
"We have consolidated our pedigrees with not much outside blood over the past seven years, concentrating on improving ourselves in-house and the calves are much more uniform now.
Burke and Peter aim to have bulls to satisfy any client any time of the year.
"This year the bulls look fantastic, being fleshy and deep bodied with great coats and great depth of meat."
Following the drought of '08, a decision was made to bring an end to the on-farm stud bull auctions, and make a shift to private sales.
"We're finding the one on one sales are more personable and you can help your client select their bull, or guide them on what will best suit their individual farming operations and requirements."
Looking to the future, Titiokura are committed to improving and growing their strengths to produce top sires for their clients.
