Tea for bag-makers was the order of the day when Whanganui groups celebrated the growing movement away from plastic shopping bags.
Organiser Deirdra McMenamin said the Tea-bags event on Tuesday, November 28, was a thank you for individuals and groups throughout Whanganui who make reusable shopping bags.
"Many of the people involved are mums with kids who make time to do this work on top of everything else," Ms McMenamin said.
"We just wanted to have a thank you before Christmas by making morning tea for everyone we know of who is involved. There is an amazing effort being made by different groups and individuals who have decided to do something and are just getting on with it."
Ms McMenamin said Morsbag maker Sandie Roach was an example of the difference an individual could make.
"Sandie brought the Morsbag concept from the UK and introduced it in Whanganui and people took it up. She has personally made and handed out thousands of bags."
Morsbags are named after the movement's British founder, Claire Morsman, who began making and distributing the bags in 2007. They are made of recycled materials and given away.
As well as the Morsbag makers, Plastic Bag Free Whanganui, Whanganui Bag Recycling Project and various charity shop volunteers are making and distributing reusable shopping bags in Whanganui.
