A free children's programme is set to start at the South Taranaki District libraries in Patea and Waverley.
Children aged from 5 to 12 are being encouraged to get Wild about Reading, as the libraries set the summer reading programme.
The six-week programme is offered free through the South Taranaki District Council (STDC) and the Lysaght-Watt Trust as a community project.
As part of the programme, children promise to read for at least 15 minutes a day and to return at least three times to share their reading with library staff.
STDC communications Rachel Harris said reading over the summer holidays was a great way to prevent a child's reading skills from slipping.
"Especially for children who have struggled throughout the school year."
The library programme helped with this in a fun way, with incentives given to each child as a small reward, she said.
Registration will be open from Monday until Saturday, December 16.
