Police say there was insufficient evidence to charge a group of people caught with a trailer-load of household items during an alleged burglary.
The incident was highlighted by Whanganui woman Ngaire Madams who in an interview on Monday said police had caught "red handed' people responsible for burgling her home, but let them go.
She said members of the Black Power gang and associates of the gang burgled her home and were caught by police with a trailer loaded with her belongings in her driveway.
The offenders were told to unload the items and leave, she said, and were not charged.
Police yesterday confirmed that on November 25, 2015 police received a report of a theft at a Matai Street property.
"Police responded to the report and investigated the incident but there was insufficient evidence to lay charges," a spokesperson said.
Ms Madams said she wanted to thank people who had sent messages of support following the interview in which she described being terrorised after three offenders smashed windows at her home on Saturday.
Police are investigating.
