A Relay For Life team is kick-starting its fundraising early this year with a new event - The Amazing Ride.
The weekend affair is set for February 25-26 in Waverley with an orientation horse trek open for all ages.
Set up by relay team Shaz Good Time, the event will pass the proceeds over to the Cancer Society, with all the money being used to help cancer patients in the Whanganui region.
"The donations will help assist people going through chemotherapy as well as wigs and other treatment expenditure," team captain Malcolm Wall said.
He said the team had been looking for alternative ways to fundraise, and a horse trek seemed like the perfect opportunity.
"It's open for all ages - it could be a 70-year-old, like a bloke I know who is entering, to young kids being led on a rein."
The ride will operate in teams of four, and participants can enter as a group or as individuals and be teamed up with other singles.
Balloons will be dispersed throughout the trek for participants to locate.
The horse trek will start on the Saturday followed by "fun and games" with prizes and a barbecue on the Sunday.
People will be encouraged to camp the night and accommodation will be available for the horses. The cost is $50 a head or $200 a team.
"I hope it will become an annual affair, as we are continually looking for new fun ways to fundraise," Mr Wall said.
"We have been looking at getting quad bikes down on Waverley Beach next year."
He said the event would not be possible without the support from main sponsors Farmlands and Keown Honda.
The 24-hour Relay For Life, the Cancer Society's big fundraiser, starts on Saturday, March 11.
