Trees are being felled by strong winds in Whanganui District.

Strong winds, combined with saturated ground conditions and this week's severe earthquake, are causing trees to fall down across the Whanganui District.

Whanganui District Council General Manager Infrastructure Mark Hughes says people travelling throughout the district need to be cautious, with more trees expected to fall.

"We urge people to take care when driving as more trees will come down," Mr Hughes said.

"We have roading teams out in areas across the district to clear fallen trees as soon as possible."

Three very large trees have fallen on Longacre Road and the road is closed while they are removed. It is expected to reopen late afternoon on Tuesday. There are also trees down on Fields Track.
