With the Whanganui local body election in its last days, voter interest is closing in on the numbers recorded in the 2013 election.

Electoral officer Noeline Moosman said, as at Friday last week, 8825 voting papers - just over 28 per cent - had been returned. For the same period three years ago 9274 had been returned.

But Mrs Moosman reminded voters that if they were going to mail their voting papers in, then they would have to get that done no later than Wednesday, October 5.

She said if voters miss that deadline then they can hand deliver their voting papers to the Whanganui District Council office in Guyton St. The office would also be open on Saturday, October 8, from 8.30am to midday to accept voting papers.

More than 31,000 voting papers were mailed out to Whanganui voters.
