An elderly woman was taken to hospital on Wednesday night after crashing her car into a power pole.

Whanganui Fire senior station officer Bryce Coneybeer said an elderly female driver hit a power pole on St Johns Hill as she turned a corner.

Firefighters took about 20 minutes freeing the woman from the car following the accident, which happened about 5.10pm on Brassey Rd.

"She was injured, obviously, but it was moderate injuries," Mr Coneybeer said.

He said the woman was taken by ambulance to Whanganui Hospital.
