A man has died after a car hit a concrete wall in Marton's Wellington Road.

The accident happened just before 10am on Monday, near Kensington Road.

There was only one person in the car, St John Whanganui territory manager John Stretton said.

"He appears to have driven off the road and hit a concrete garden wall."

The older man was found by members of the public, who attempted to resuscitate him, without success.

He was also seen by a doctor from Marton's Stewart St medical centre. Police and Marton volunteer firefighters attended as well.

The man may have suffered some kind of medical event, Mr Stretton said, but that would be for a coroner to determine.
