Woman to be sentenced for deception

A woman has admitted setting up three electricity accounts, racking up debt in another person's name.

Malika Kara, 25, appeared in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to three charges of obtaining by deception and one of using a document to gain pecuniary advantage.

Between October and December 2014, Kara set up accounts with Powershop, Meridian Energy and Might River Power in the name of someone she had attended school with.

The accounts racked up hundreds of dollars of debt.

Kara also obtained a $100 prezzie card from Meridian Energy.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Stephen Butler said the victim "at no time" gave permission for their details to be used.

Kara will reappear for sentencing on October 31.
